Today during center time, I wandered over to the play dough center.  We just introduced and opened this yesterday, so it’s still pretty new.  One quiet little girl, Gilly, was making letters with her dough.  Naturally, I took this as an opportunity to see if she was picking up any sounds.

I placed an F, O, and X next to each other and asked her if she knew any of the sounds.  Indeed, she did and made each one and then blended the word together.

All the while, Charlie was watching this unfold before his eyes.  I’m only starting to figure out sweet Charlie.  He says the most random comments and I’m never quite sure how much he’s understanding.  He does have moments of clarity though…

Back to Gilly.  After reading ‘fox’, I replaced the F with a B and asked what this would say.  As she began thinking, Charlie leaned over his bright orange play dough and blurted out, “/B/, /B/, Box!”

He looked just as surprised as me to hear that coming out of his mouth.

“You are smart, Charlie, SO smart,” was all I could muster.

He walked over and gave me a big hug.  You’ve got to love those moments.
