Every once in awhile, I find something smart coming out of my mouth. Never sure if I’ve heard it somewhere before or if it’s truly original, I am often hesitant to share for fear of stealing someone else’s great idea.  Well, I am pretty sure I did coin this one – ‘Learn the song, learn the skill.’

It’s rather simple and that’s why I say it to my class all the time.  Every time I fire up the iPod and we sing, I put my hand to my ear in a silent attempt to encourage louder singing, and I remind them of this mantra.

I’ve written about singing many times and there isn’t really much new to add, but I am always amazed at how little some teachers sing.  I realize I can go a little overboard with it, but then again, it’s fun and it helps build community.  It’s really hard to be in a bad mood when you’re singing.  When you’re class is having trouble with a particular concept, if you can find a song to go with it, they’ll learn the long and then learn the skill.

Sometimes, it really is that simple.
