Well, yesterday was day twelve for my new crop of sprouts.  I have to say, without a doubt, this is one of the best classes I have ever had.  Ever.  Now, if you’ve been reading me for a long time, you’d know I don’t proclaim that every year… I don’t know that I’ve ever written that.  After a few days, I got to thinking, what is it about this group that, as a whole, is making them so darn stellar?

largeFirst and foremost, they are all sweet.  Every single one is kind and caring.  Usually I have a few that take some time for me to ‘figure out’ and get them to leave the ‘dark side’ and come over the ‘light side’.  With some children, it can take months to help guide them and others, I fear may never be persuaded.  Well this year, they’re all Jedis already… I’m talking about being loving, sweet, respectful children.  There are plenty of levels of academic and social development, but at their core, they’re all basically nice kids.

Every year I have one, maybe two, real leaders.  You know those children that just beg to help not only the teacher, but other kids too.  Well this year, I must have four or five children who, from day one, want to help.  It makes a world of difference in our developing community, and the other sprouts see their leadership and want to follow.  It makes for a powerful community of learning… even by day twelve.

Finally, more than ever, I can tell I have a community of parents who want to partner with me to help their children.  Don’t get me wrong, I truly believe all parents want what is best for their child, but in my experience, some feel education is more of a partnership and others feel it’s simply my job.  Of course the children know this and I’m already planning a multitude of ways to encourage even more parent involvement.

In case you can’t tell, I’m simply enamored with my group this year.  It’s not the smallest class I’ve ever had and it’s not the lowest or highest academically either, but they just might be, as a whole, the sweetest crew I’ve ever had and with that already in place, my job is going to be just that much more enjoyable.
